Speaking in Tongues

by Richard Young on 05/31/11

We of the Apologetic Research Center, hold the position that the tongues speaking discussion is an "in house debate," having Christians of good conscious on both sides. Where do you stand on the issue, and why. Feel free to join the discussion.

I must caution, however, that there are many today who see this phenomenon as validation of the salvation experience itself, most notably of whom are individuals holding a "Jesus Only" theology. To them, speaking in tongues is the third step in their 3-step plan of salvation. Without this experience, to them, one is not, and cannot be saved. We of ARC believe this teaching to be heretical, and have exposed it as such in the ARC Perspective entitled; JESUS ONLY?  Examining Modern Day Modalism.

As we all know, there are many "takes" (perspectives/views) on Christianity. The bible says that God has hidden these deep truths. They are hidden for those whose hearts seek after God on his terms (as the word of God indicates), from a true heart. We must have the Spirit of God to draw us first before we may come before him. Too many speak words of repentance but the Spirit knows that they were not ready to truly repent and the regeneration did not take place. God's standard requires a heart-change desire...godly sorrow that leads to repentance. Once we acknowledge Christ as Savior and become born-again, then we are able (with our relationship/connection with God) to fellowship and "Know" him--to be led and guided by him. He reveals his truth to us as we seek after him, through his word...etc. The hidden truths slowly but surely are revealed as we nurture our relationship and walk after his love. His word comes alive and therefore, the hidden things become LIKE a revelation to us--revealing more each time in his word whose depth never ends. But we receive what we can chew and digest. Our natural understanding can hinders us, but as we grow--we see better through life's experiences. Just like true Christianity cannot be seen or understood--completely--with the natural mind, it takes the Spirit of God to hep us see. In the same way, the views of speaking in tongues vary in hundreds of ways--to bring division among the bretheren and to diverse God's people from power, the enemy would do anything to bring deception and creep in to bring an imitation. The enemy always has an imitation to the truth that many fall into so that there is confusion and God's word seems like a lie. God's people or others fall into a different Spirit (imitation) if not being watchful and careful. The seducing spirit fakes through people in sin and not bearing true fruit. The truth is distorted and God is not willing to cast his pearls to the swine. He hides his precious item for only those who he finds a clean temple. The baptism of the Holy Spirit exists with ONE of the evidences of speaking in tongues. So, if the tongues come-- they come in Holy pursuit towards God, and we are able to dice deeper into his glory. He empowers us to live more fully in us in ways that saturates the soul! This power will only be stirred up only in a clean temple. I believe in one of the evidences of speaking in tongues, but I do not believe that everyone who does is of God. We will be know by our fruit! Speaking in tongues is not the focus. God's spirit is! That's the problem with Charismatics and many of the pentecostal groups, who yield towards "experiences" and tongues rather than holy sanctified living. Tongues will come when not the focus. It comes as we pursue God in faith, as we humble our mind, strong holds of thinking, pride, and rather, the flesh. God demands total humility!
